To determine if ALDH1 was activated by Mg2+ ions, we tested the effects of
various concentrations of divalent cations on the activity of ALDH1.
We found that the activity of ALDH1 was stimulated 2.8-, 3.8-,
and 2.1-fold with 20 mM MgCl2, 30 mM CaCl2, and 2 mM MnCl2,
respectively, while ZnCl2 inhibited the activity of ALDH1.
The concentration for 50% inhibition was 0.035 mM.
